She was “the skirt who wore men’s clothes”. In 1859, Elsie Guerin came to Golden to revenge the murder of her husband. Known as Mountain Charley in the mining camps, Elsie was married at twelve, widowed at sixteen, and wore men’s clothes to find work and her husband’s killer. Only George West knew her true identity and mission. He could never have imagined that her legend as Mountain Charley would continue to be played out on the battlefields of Missouri in the coming Civil War, and George West would be a major part of her story.
