The specter of organized crime and mob violence came to Golden in 1939 when 25 mobsters surrendered to the Sheriff following a raid on the LaPalmarte Restaurant on West 38th Avenue. The rise in organized crime was confirmed in 1963 when mobster Harold “Murph” Cohen was found floating face down in a small lake in Golden. Mob rule existed until 1973 when the last racketeer was brought to justice and the last slot machine was donated to Golden History Museum & Park. Lecture presented by Dennis Potter, retired Captain with Jefferson County Sherriff’s Office.
